INSTRUCTIONS

TASK2

In this task, we have to write a 300 to 350 word visual analysis of the artwork we selected from the Task1. Besides, sketch 3 ideas on how the selected design can be improved. Describe each idea and support it with a rationale in about 30-50 words. We may include some visual references (cite the sources) that inspire our own ideas.

Figure 1.1 Give them their flowers / Give me my flowers, Week2 (10/2/2024)

Title of artwork: Give them their flowers / Give me my flowers

Artist's name: Tofunmi Yosola

Medium: Digital

1. Visual Analysis

Observation

This artwork is in portrait format. Flowers surround and cover half or more of a man's face. Besides, the leaves in the lower left corner also cover the man’s cheek. The man's face is facing in front, show only one eye, part of the nose and a mouth. He is positioned behind flowers and leaves. His eyes looks calm and a little sad in this artwork. Above his eyebrow, there are three gemstoneFor the visual elements, the artist used pink, orange, green, dark brown, yellow and white. The color of this artwork is quite balance. In this artwork, the larger area is the man's face which is dark brown color.

Analysis

This design is asymmetrical balanceThe left half of the artwork takes up more of the man's face, while the right half has more flowers. The man's left face has fewer flowers. The emphasis is on the man's face. This was because his face is dark brown color contrasts with surrounding bright colors. Besides, his eye is in the middle of the image, making it more attractive. There is contrast because the dark brown face contrasts with the bright colors such as pink, orange, green, white, and yellow. Besides, the man's face and the flowers and leaves are integrated to create harmony & unity. The leaves in the lower left corner have flow and the curved lines of the flowers create a movement that leads our eyes to look at the main character in the artwork.

Interpretation

About this artwork, the artist only provides a brief description: "A man’s face covered in flowers and  gemstones. Inspired by the saying that people aren't often celebrated until they've passed away." Through my own understanding, this artwork is trying to express that people should be appreciated while they are still alive, not after they have passed away. The man's eye looks a bit sad and calm maybe because he was not praised during his lifetime, but was noticed after his death. The flowers and gemstone also may mean a memorial for a dead person. So, this artwork reminds us to cherish and praise those around us while they are still alive, not until it is too late.

2. Ideas

Reference#1

Figure 2.1 Reference#1, Week4 (24/2/2025)

Sketch#1

In Figure 2.2, the black shadow that appears in front of the tombstone is the soul of the deceased, watching the withered flowers on his tombstone become full of flowers. The withered flowers on the tombstone bloom after the person dies, representing that people are often ignored during their lifetime but praised after their death. The cracks in the ground represent the passage of time.

Design Principles

  • Symmetrical Balance: The tombstone is in the center of the picture. The flowers on the left and right sides are arranged symmetrically. The black shadow is facing the tombstone, enhancing the sense of symmetry.
  • Contrast: The dark color shadow and the lines in the background make the characters stand out more.
  • Movement: The shadow's posture direct the viewer's attention to the tombstone.
  • Harmony &Unity: People, tombstones, and flowers all use the same lines.
  • Hierarchy: The visual focus is the person in the foreground. The secondary focus is the tombstone.

Reference#2

Figure 2.3 Reference#2, Week4 (24/2/2025)

Sketch#2

In Figure 2.4, a hand stretches out from the flowers, but cannot get them. This represent that no matter how hard he tries, he cannot get praise. The blank space emphasizes its unreachability. The surrounding flowers represent praise, but they are meant for the dead, not the living.

Design Principles
  • Emphasis: The hand has straight lines, which contrasts with the complex flowers around it, attracting the viewer's attention. Besides, the blank space is in the center of the picture, attracting the viewer to see the hand at first.
  • Symmetrical Balance: The hand is in the center, and the flowers are distributed around it, giving the whole picture a sense of balance.
  • Contrast: The blank space in the picture enhances the contrast. Besides, the lines of the flower are more tortuous, while the lines of the hand are quite straight, making the hand the visual focus of the picture.
  • Movement: The curve lines of the flower create a sense of movement. The movement of the hand reaching upward also creates a sense of movement.
  • Repetition: There is repetitiveness in the shape of the flowers.

Reference#3

Figure 2.5 Reference#3, Week4 (24/2/2025)

Sketch#3

In Figure 2.6, a person is surrounded by flowers. The shoulders and below are completely covered in flowers, with only the face with closed eyes exposed. Closed eyes represent death. Flowers represent people's praise. However, these flowers bloom after the person dies, represent that the living people's belated attention to the deceased.

Design Principles
  • Symmetrical Balance: The person's face is in the center, with the flowers uniformly distributed around it.
  • Contrast: The lines and colors of the face contrast with the dense flowers in the background.
  • Emphasis: The person's face is the visual focus. It contrasts with the complex lines of the flowers around it, attracting the viewer's attention.
  • Movement: The curve lines of the flower create a sense of movement.
  • Hierarchy: The person is the main focus, while the flowers serve as background elements, creating a hierarchy in the picture.
  • Repetition: There is repetitiveness in the shape of the flowers, the direction of the flower stems, and the lines.

FEEDBACK

Week4

- When describing movement, can add "create a movement that leads our eyes to look at the main character in the artwork".

-In the interpretation, can end it with a proper conclusion.

Week5

- Forgot to add design principles.

- Sketch#2 is interesting, can be develop.

- Sketch#3 is very much similar of the original artwork. Try to look at different references of maybe facial expression or profile shot instead of facing people.

- It would be good to have some visual references.
